General Orthopedics
Some of the general orthopedic conditions Dr. Meli treats include:
- Simple and complex fractures
- Sprains and strains
- Tendonitis and bursitis
- Muscle spasms and tears
- Ligament, tendon, and cartilage tears
- Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
At Paul Meli Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Meli cares for patients of all ages. He will evaluate and diagnose your injury or disorder and recommend a comprehensive care plan. Depending on your condition or injury, Dr. Meli may be able to treat it without surgery. Nonsurgical treatment options include medication, exercise, and other rehabilitative or alternative therapies.
Cortisone injections are a common short-term treatment for pain relief. Cortisone, also known as corticosteroid, is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication that is injected directly into joints such as shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles to temporarily decrease inflammation and pain.
For knee arthritis, injections of a viscosupplementation medication such as Synvisc can temporarily help restore the cushioning and lubricating properties of joint fluid in the knee, which reduces pain. It may be helpful for people who are trying to delay surgery or those who are not candidates for knee replacement surgery.
Regenerative medicine therapies, such as PRP, can also be effective nonsurgical solutions for musculoskeletal pain.
If you do not respond to these treatments, Dr. Meli may recommend surgery. One of the most common orthopedic procedures is arthroscopy. This minimally invasive procedure involves the use of special miniature cameras and equipment to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint. Many different injuries can be treated arthroscopically, including meniscus and ACL tears in the knee and rotator cuff tears and impingement syndrome in the shoulder.
If you have advanced osteoarthritis in your knee, Dr. Meli may perform joint replacement surgery, during which the damaged part of the joint is removed and replaced with an artificial implant known as a prosthesis.
Rehabilitation is often an important aspect of treatment and is almost always recommended after orthopedic surgery. Dr. Meli will refer you for physical therapy or occupational therapy to help restore your movement, strength, and function.
